The Lazarus Tomb

The problem of man has always been the same – we all die, just as this man had earlier that day and just as Lazarus had almost 2,000 years ago.  As these men filing past me mourned their lost family member and friend, so had Lazarus’ family and friends grieved for him.

Description

The Tomb of Lazarus is located in the town of Bethany, on the eastern slope of the Mount of Olives. I was standing in front of the tomb one day trying to set up a video shot, but it wasn’t looking like I wanted it to. The tomb is nondescript with a plain, black entrance and an ugly orange sign above it that reads, “Lazarus Tomb” in Hebrew, Arabic and English. I was feeling frustrated, trying to figure out how to “bring the shot to life”. As I was standing there, something completely unexpected occurred. I heard noises and turned, with my camera following my eye, to see what the commotion was. Boys with palm branches were walking in front of a crowd of men who were carrying a wooden coffin. I could see the cloth-wrapped body in the open, wooden box as they passed by.  In that moment it struck me that the problem of man has always been the same – we all die, just as this man had earlier that day and just as Lazarus had almost 2,000 years ago. As these men filing past me mourned their lost family member and friend, so had Lazarus’ family and friends grieved for him. But, their mourning turned to celebration because Jesus called Lazarus out of the tomb.  Soon thereafter, would come Jesus’ own death and burial.   But, his Father would call him out of his tomb as well…and those who mourned Him would greatly rejoice! Praise be to Jesus, the sinless One who conquered death, who calls to all mankind offering Resurrection and Life!!
